The Conservative MP says he has followed the lead of Nigel Farage and put in a subject access request

A Conservative MP says he has been "debanked" for more than a year and still hasn’t been able to retrieve his money.

Royston Smith told GB News he still has no answers to why TSB closed his accounts in April 2022.

The MP for Southampton, Itchen has written to the Chief Executive of the bank, Robin Bulloch, several times to try to get some answers but is yet to receive a reply from him.

Speaking on Nigel Farage’s show, he said: “I’ve written to him five times in total and he has not had the common courtesy or decency even to acknowledge my letters.

“I’ve had some replies from their public affairs people from time to time but the last two times that I wrote to the Chief Executive, I demanded my money back and I said that I would hold him personally responsible and I said that I would take legal action.

“He didn’t even reply to that letter.

“They have now been sitting with my money in their bank for over a year.”

Smith says that he has been in touch with the Financial Ombudsman Service, which he described as "worse than useless” as he claims they are yet to investigate, but they have offered him £75.

He was also provided with a cheque which he was unable to cash because it had expired by the time he could find somewhere to bank with.

The MP said: “I went back to them with a copy of the cheque with all the details and I asked them could they reissue it.

“I asked them to do that in April, I asked them again in June, then I followed your lead Nigel and put in a subject access request last week.”

Smith says he hadn’t heard anything until today, after he tweeted about his situation this morning.

He says this prompted a reply from TSB who have now offered him a telephone call to "discuss how we can resolve the issue".

A TSB spokesperson said: "TSB accounts are reviewed on a periodical basis to ensure we comply with regulatory obligations. We do not comment on individual customer cases."

It comes after Nigel Farage announced on his show that he will be launching a non-political organisation to give a voice to those who have lost their bank accounts.
